Study Session

  • Supporting Students: Gang Prevention and Intervention
District leaders and partners shared how the Promising Youth Program, a partnership with the Salt Lake City Police Department, helps students build life skills and make positive choices through weekly sessions with youth advocates at school. Leaders also updated the Board on work toward a partnership with Choose Gang Free, a countywide prevention and intervention program.

Reports

  • Understanding Enrollment: Annual Enrollment Report
Our K–12 enrollment at the annual October 1 count is 17,288. This year’s enrollment is 976 students lower than last year’s enrollment. Our Pre-K sites serve an additional 482 younger students. Students in our district speak 76 different languages. The share of multilingual learners, students from low-income households, and students experiencing homelessness remains about the same as last year. See the latest data on the district’s demographics webpage.
  • Supporting Student Success: School Counselor Ratios
The district now has an average of one school counselor for every 290 students, an improvement from one counselor for every 363 students in 2020-21. Reaching the American School Counselor Association’s national recommendation ratio of 1:250 would require nine more counselors, at an estimated cost of $1.16 million. The Board’s finance committee will continue exploring options and priorities.
  • Preserving Our Collection: District Art Inventory
The Business Administration department is working on an inventory of the district’s art collection, which consists largely of donated pieces displayed in our schools. Staff are working with each site to locate artwork and complete the inventory. They are also developing guidance to support the efficient identification, location, and management of all art pieces.
  • Building a Sustainable Future: Annual Sustainability Update
Renewable sources supplied 27% of district electricity last year, and nearly half of students attend a school served by solar. The district received $2.83 million in federal tax credits and saved 15 million gallons toward its 50-million-gallon water-reduction goal. As the district continues its sustainability work, leaders will evaluate environmental goals alongside the financial costs of potential improvements. This conversation will continue in a future Board study session.
  • Strengthening Community Voices: Community Advisory Council Update
Associate Superintendent Analis Ruiz shared an update on selecting members for the new SLCSD Board Community Advisory Council. The council will share community perspectives, recommendations, and feedback with the Board on public education issues and will serve in an advisory role without decision-making or oversight authority. The Board will vote on members Wednesday, November 4. (The meeting was moved from Tuesday, November 3, to avoid conflicting with Election Day.)
